Cave Story, for those of you who have not heard of it is a freeware platform game that originally came out in 2004. Created by Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya over the course of five years, the game is a loving homage to titles like Metroid and Castlevania that Amaya played in his youth. Last year, Amaya started to see some income from his labor of love thanks to releases on DSiWare and WiiWare. A Mac version appeared on the Mac App Store in September, too, and earlier this month also saw the release of a 3DS remake.
Now PC owners can enjoy the new additions that Cave Story+ offers over the freeware original thanks to yesterday’s release on Steam. Cave Story+ includes the original chunky 320×240 pixel art as well as an upgraded “HD” mode; both the original and a remastered soundtrack; six new play modes; and the promise of future content updates. If you haven’t tried this excellent game yet, then now’s a good time to jump in — Steam’s knocking 15% off the price for the moment, making it $8.49 rather than the usual $9.99. And, being a SteamPlay title, you can play it on both PC and Mac.
Alternatively, if you’re cheap and/or poor, you can pick up the original freeware Japanese version and its English translation patch from this tribute site – though obviously this version doesn’t have the enhancements and additional content that the “Plus” version offers.
Arguably the most well-known indie game of all time, Cave Story features a completely original storyline wrapped with personality, mystery and hours of fast-paced fun. Cave Story is an action-adventure game from the critically acclaimed independent designer, Daisuke Amaya–or Pixel to his fans. Overflowing with unmatched charm and character, Cave Story takes you into a rare world where a curious race of innocent rabbit-like creatures, called Mimigas, run free.
You wake up in a dark cave with no memory of who you are, where you came from or why you’re in such a place. Uncovering Mimiga Village you discover that the once-carefree Mimigas are in danger at the hands of a maniacal scientist. The Mimigas’ only hope rest squarely on the shoulders of a quiet, amnesiac boy who can’t remember his own name.
Run, jump, shoot, fly and explore your way through a massive action-adventure reminiscent of classic 8- and 16-bit games. Take control and learn the origins of this world’s power, stop the delusional villain and save the Mimiga!
