Man receives Cease and Desist Order for fiddling with Skylander toysNews
Brandon Wilson, a graphing calculator programmer, likes to tinker with machines and he posts his findings online, for no reason other than pure entertainment and curiosity on his part. Recently, he turned his attention to Skylanders, the unique game that uses physical toys to interact with a virtual world. But, Activision apparently was not happy with this at all and they slapped him with a cease and desist order.
Wilson worked out the encryption protocol used for storing data on the toys, and intended to emulate his own Skylanders portal peripheral. Although his activities involved working around some security chips, his intent was purely innocent and clearly was not intended for piracy. Lawyers don’t discriminate, however, and Wilson has agreed not to continue publishing his findings.
It is rather unfortunate that people who just take genuine interest in these kind of projects get shut down so fast because everyone assume it has something to do with piracy. While we can understand that the lawyers cannot discriminate it does not make it any less sad that these kind of interesting projects get shut down on a daily basis.
What are your opinions in him getting shut down? Do you feel there could have been a way where he could have just posted some findings, or at least show what he found without giving how to do these things? Let us know your opinions in the comments below, we’d love to have your opinion.
